Syntymävuosia is a Finnish phrase that literally means “years of birth” and is used to refer to the specific years in which people were born. In demographic studies, the distribution of syntymävuosia is examined to understand the age structure of a population, track migration patterns, or analyze the impact of historical events on fertility rates. For example, the number of people born in 2005 is often compared to those born in 2006 to assess trends in birth rates.

The phrase is frequently found in statistical reports produced by the National Institute of Health (KTL) and the Social Insurance Institution (Kela). When these institutions publish “syntymävuosiluettelu” (birth year lists), they typically include the total population per birth year, the proportion of working-age individuals, and changes over time. These data help policymakers design age‑specific programs, such as pension reforms or youth employment initiatives.

In everyday Finnish language, syntymävuosia can appear in contexts such as “Luokalla on opiskelijoita syntymävuosilta 2000–2002” (The class consists of students born between 2000 and 2002). The phrase is also used informally to describe the range of ages present at an event, for instance “Menillä oli syntymävuosia 1970–1985.”
