Symplectites are a type of rock texture characterized by a fine-grained intergrowth of two or more minerals that appear intimately mixed, often in a swirling or granular pattern. The name "symplectite" comes from the Greek word "symplektos," meaning intertwined or interwoven. This texture commonly forms during metamorphic processes, particularly during retrograde metamorphism, where the breakdown of unstable high-temperature minerals leads to the formation of new, stable minerals at lower temperatures.

The characteristic appearance of symplectite arises from the rapid and often simultaneous crystallization of the new mineral phases from the dissolving parent mineral. This co-precipitation results in a very fine-grained texture where the individual mineral grains are too small to be easily resolved with the naked eye, and often require microscopic examination. Common mineral associations found in symplectites include quartz and feldspar, or amphibole and plagioclase.

Symplectites are important indicators for geologists as they can provide clues about the pressure and temperature conditions that a rock has experienced. The specific mineral assemblage within a symplectite can help reconstruct the metamorphic P-T path of the rock. They are frequently observed in a variety of metamorphic rocks, including gneisses, schists, and granulites, and can also be found in some metasomatic rocks. Understanding symplectite formation aids in deciphering the complex thermal and deformational histories of the Earth's crust.
