In sympathetic systems, descent groups such as lineages or clans are recognized through both parental lines, but the paternal line tends to be more salient for certain social domains.

In practice, a sympatrilineal arrangement may privilege paternal ancestry for inheritance, political authority, residence patterns, or succession, while maternal kin can influence other aspects of social life, such as marriage alliances, ritual obligations, or affinal networks.
