Symaskinen, or sewing machine, is a mechanical or electromechanical device used to stitch fabric and other materials together with thread. The first patent for a sewing machine was granted to Thomas Saint in 1790 in Great Britain. However, his machine was never manufactured and its design is not fully known. Several other inventors made contributions throughout the early 19th century, including Elias Howe Jr., who patented a machine in 1846 that used a lockstitch. Isaac Singer's machine, patented in 1851, was the first commercially successful one, incorporating features that made it more practical for widespread use.

Modern sewing machines can perform a wide variety of stitches and functions, including straight stitching, zigzag stitching, buttonhole making, and embroidery. They come in various forms, from basic mechanical models for home use to highly advanced industrial machines capable of high-speed production. The development of the sewing machine significantly impacted the textile industry, leading to mass production of clothing and other fabric goods, and also made sewing more accessible for individuals for mending and creating garments.
