They work by stimulating an immune response against specific antigens, which are molecules found on cancer cells that the immune system might not recognize as foreign.

There are several approaches to developing cancer vaccines. One common method involves using tumor cells or parts of tumor cells. Another strategy utilizes dendritic cells, which are immune cells that can be loaded with tumor antigens and then reintroduced into the patient. Viral vectors can also be employed to deliver tumor antigens to the body, prompting an immune response. The development of cancer vaccines has been an active area of research for decades. Currently, a few therapeutic cancer vaccines have received regulatory approval in certain regions, primarily for specific indications like prostate cancer. Research continues to explore new targets, delivery methods, and combinations with other cancer treatments, such as checkpoint inhibitors, to improve the efficacy of these innovative therapies. The goal is to develop vaccines that can induce durable and protective anti-tumor immunity.
