A svetshjälm, commonly known as a welding helmet, is a piece of personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to shield the eyes, face, and neck from the harmful effects of welding. These effects include intense ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation, sparks, spatter, and heat generated during the welding process.

The primary component of a welding helmet is its lens. Traditional welding helmets use a fixed-shade, tinted lens made of darkened glass. However, modern helmets often feature an auto-darkening lens (ADF). An ADF welding helmet contains electronic sensors that detect the bright flash of a welding arc. Upon detection, the electronic filters in the lens rapidly darken to a safe, predetermined shade, protecting the welder's eyes. When the arc is extinguished, the lens returns to its clear state, allowing the welder to see their work clearly between welds without having to lift the helmet.

Welding helmets are constructed from materials that are resistant to heat and impact, typically plastics like polycarbonate or fiberglass. They are designed to be lightweight and comfortable for extended wear, with adjustable headgear to ensure a secure fit. Proper use and maintenance of a welding helmet are crucial for preventing welding-related eye injuries, such as arc eye (photokeratitis), and other facial burns. Different welding processes, such as TIG, MIG, and stick welding, may require different lens shades for optimal protection and visibility.
