Suvokim is a traditional Korean percussion instrument that belongs to the family of barrel drums. It is commonly used in Korean folk music, particularly in ensembles such as the gayageum (a Korean zither) and daegeum (a Korean flute) groups, as well as in pansori (a form of Korean narrative singing). The name "suvokim" is derived from the Korean words su (수), meaning "hand," and vokim (복임), which refers to the drum’s role in accompanying and enhancing the rhythm of other instruments.

The suvokim typically consists of a cylindrical wooden barrel, often made from pine or other lightweight hardwoods, with a diameter of about 12 to 15 centimeters and a length of roughly 20 to 25 centimeters. The drumhead is made of animal skin, traditionally from goats or deer, stretched tightly over one end of the barrel. The drum is played by striking the head with the fingers or palms of the hands, producing a resonant, deep tone that complements the melodic lines of Korean instruments. The suvokim is often paired with other percussion instruments like the janggu (a two-sided Korean drum) or the kwaenggwari (a small hourglass drum) to create layered rhythmic textures.

In Korean traditional music, the suvokim serves both a rhythmic and harmonic function. Its role is to provide a steady pulse, accentuate beats, and sometimes introduce melodic variations through intricate finger techniques. The instrument is also used in ceremonial music, such as that performed during sijo (traditional Korean poetry recitals) or nongak (folk music associated with agricultural festivals). While less prominent than other Korean percussion instruments in modern contexts, the suvokim remains an important part of preserving the country’s musical heritage. Its simple yet expressive sound continues to be valued in both traditional and contemporary Korean musical performances.
