Surjektiivisuus, often translated as surjectivity or onto, is a fundamental concept in mathematics, particularly in the study of functions and mappings between sets. A function f from a set A to a set B is considered surjective if every element in the codomain B has at least one corresponding element in the domain A that maps to it. In simpler terms, the range of the function must be equal to its codomain.

Formally, for a function f: A -> B, f is surjective if for every element y in B, there exists at least one element x in A such that f(x) = y. This is often expressed using universal quantifiers: ∀y ∈ B, ∃x ∈ A such that f(x) = y.

A common way to determine if a function is surjective is to examine its range. If the set of all possible output values (the range) is identical to the set of all potential output values (the codomain), then the function is surjective. If there are elements in the codomain that are never reached by the function, then it is not surjective.

Surjectivity is one of the three main properties that characterize functions, alongside injectivity (one-to-one) and bijectivity (both injective and surjective). Understanding surjectivity is crucial in various areas of mathematics, including abstract algebra, linear algebra, and set theory, as it helps define the behavior and properties of transformations and operations.
