Suojavaate, or protective clothing, refers to garments designed to protect the wearer from hazards encountered in work, sport, healthcare, or military contexts. It is typically considered personal protective equipment (PPE) and is selected based on the hazard, such as heat and flame, chemicals, mechanical injury, biological agents, electrical risks, or adverse weather.

In the European Union, PPE is governed by Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and products bearing the CE mark meet harmonized standards (EN). Common standards cover general requirements (EN 13688), mechanical risks (EN 388), chemical risks (EN 374), weather protection (EN 343 and related standards), and fire/thermal risks (such as EN 11612). Standards aim to ensure that clothing provides the stated level of protection while remaining comfortable and durable.

Materials and designs vary widely. Protective fabrics may include cotton blends, synthetics, aramids or Nomex, barrier laminated fabrics, and coated or laminated rainwear. Garments can be single-purpose or multi‑purpose PPE, with features such as heat resistance, chemical barrier, cut protection, electrical insulation, high visibility, and weatherproofing. Fit, size, and comfort are important to maintain protection during extended use.

Care and maintenance require regular inspection for signs of wear or damage, cleaning according to manufacturer instructions, and proper decontamination when exposed to hazards. Damaged or contaminated garments should be removed from service and replaced to ensure ongoing protection.
