Suojausavaimia, often translated as "protection keys" or "security keys," refers to physical devices or software solutions used to authenticate users and protect access to digital systems and sensitive data. These keys are a crucial component of modern cybersecurity strategies, moving beyond traditional password-based authentication to offer enhanced security.

There are several types of suojausavaimia. Hardware security keys, such as USB tokens or near-field communication (NFC) devices, are common. These keys typically generate one-time passwords or use cryptographic protocols to verify the user's identity. Software-based suojausavaimia include authenticator apps that generate time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) or push notifications to a user's mobile device for approval. Biometric authentication, like fingerprint or facial recognition, can also function as a form of suojausavain, directly verifying a user's unique biological characteristics.

The primary function of suojausavaimia is to provide a second factor of authentication, often referred to as multi-factor authentication (MFA) or two-factor authentication (2FA). This means that in addition to a password (the first factor), a user must present their suojausavain (the second factor) to gain access. This significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access, as even if a password is compromised, the attacker would still need possession of the physical key or access to the authenticated device. They are widely implemented in online banking, corporate networks, and cloud services to safeguard user accounts and protect against phishing attacks and credential stuffing.
