Suojamaiset are a breed of dog originating from Finland. They are a medium-sized breed, typically weighing between 18 to 27 kilograms (40 to 60 pounds) and standing at about 50 to 58 centimeters (20 to 23 inches) at the withers. Suojamaiset are known for their strong, muscular build and dense, weather-resistant coat, which can be black, gray, or a combination of both. Their coat is short and smooth, with a thick undercoat that provides excellent insulation against cold temperatures.

The breed is named after the Finnish word "suojama" which means "protected" or "sheltered," reflecting their role as guardian dogs in Finnish history. Suojamaiset were traditionally used for herding and guarding livestock, as well as for protection of homes and families. They are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and protective nature. Despite their historical role, Suojamaiset are also popular as family pets due to their friendly and affectionate temperament.

Suojamaiset are generally healthy dogs, but like all breeds, they can be prone to certain health issues. Common health problems include hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and certain types of cancer.
