Some versions create a default expiry unless renewal is expressly granted, while others require periodic review to determine if extension is warranted.

Sunset clauses can promote accountability, limit the risk of permanent powers or policies, and provide a built-in moment for impact assessment. They are often used for temporary emergency powers, transitional arrangements, regulatory experiments, or tax and spending provisions. Critics, however, warn that sunsets can create policy uncertainty, lead to abrupt discontinuities, or be exploited to obstruct renewal, even when continued operation is desirable.
