Suljettupistemenetelmät, known in English as closed-loop methods, are a class of control system techniques where the control action is continuously adjusted based on feedback from the system's output. This means the system monitors its own performance and uses that information to modify its behavior to achieve a desired state.

The core principle of a closed-loop system is the feedback loop. A sensor measures the actual output of the system, such as temperature, speed, or position. This measured value is then compared to the desired setpoint or target value. The difference between the actual output and the setpoint is called the error signal. The controller then uses this error signal to calculate and apply a corrective action to the system's input, aiming to reduce the error to zero.

This continuous monitoring and adjustment process allows closed-loop systems to be robust and adapt to disturbances or changes in the environment. Unlike open-loop systems, where control actions are predetermined and do not account for the actual outcome, closed-loop methods automatically compensate for variations. This makes them essential in applications where precise control and stability are critical, such as in thermostats regulating room temperature, cruise control systems in vehicles, and industrial process control.

Common examples of closed-loop control algorithms include Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers, which use proportional, integral, and derivative terms of the error signal to determine the control output. The effectiveness of closed-loop methods lies in their ability to maintain a desired system state despite external influences.
