Sulfonate-based refers to substances that incorporate the sulfonate functional group, typically the sulfonate anion SO3−, either as a counterion in salts or covalently bound as sulfonate esters or aryl sulfonates. In salts, the sulfonate is paired with a metal or ammonium cation (for example sodium sulfonates) and is highly polar and water-soluble. In covalently bound forms, the sulfonate group is part of functional groups such as sulfonate esters (RO-SO2-Ar) or aryl sulfonates (Ar-SO3−), created through sulfonation or sulfonylation reactions.

The sulfonate group is characterized by high resonance stabilization and strong acidity, often imparting substantial hydrophilicity and ionic character to the compound. This leads to distinctive properties useful across disciplines, including chemical stability in many environments and, in certain forms, usefulness as a leaving group in organic synthesis (as seen with tosylates and mesylates).

Sulfonate-containing surfactants are common in household and industrial cleaners due to their surfactant properties. Polymeric sulfonates, such as sulfonated polystyrene or Nafion-like polymers, serve as ion exchange resins and proton-conducting membranes in fuel cells. Sulfonate groups also appear in pharmaceuticals as activating or protecting groups (tosyl and mesyl derivatives) during synthesis, and in natural products as metabolites or signaling molecules (for example certain sulfonated amino acids and marine sulfonates).

Synthesis methods typically involve sulfonation of hydrocarbons or the formation of sulfonate esters from alcohols using sulfonyl chlorides. The term encompasses a broad class of compounds and is distinct from sulfate-containing species, which have different oxidation states and chemistry.
