Sulfosulfuric acid can cause severe burns and should be diluted in situ before use. Proper waste management is essential, as sulfonated products may remain acidic and potentially toxic.

In organic synthesis, sulfation reagents provide a single-step route to highly functionalized molecules, and their selectivity can be tuned by temperature, solvent choice, and the presence of catalysts.
