Sulfaattisilla refers to compounds containing the sulfate ion, SO4^2-. This ion is formed from sulfuric acid, H2SO4, and consists of a sulfur atom covalently bonded to four oxygen atoms. Sulfate ions are common in both organic and inorganic chemistry. Many naturally occurring minerals are sulfates, such as gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate), barite (barium sulfate), and Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate heptahydrate). Biological sulfate reduction is a key process in anaerobic environments, carried out by microorganisms that convert sulfate into hydrogen sulfide.
