Sukupuolisoluja, also known as gametes, are reproductive cells that are essential for sexual reproduction in most multicellular organisms. In males, these cells are called sperm, and in females, they are called eggs or ova. Each gamete contains half the number of chromosomes of a normal body cell, a state known as haploid. This reduction in chromosome number is achieved through a process called meiosis.

The primary function of gametes is to fuse with a gamete from the opposite sex during fertilization. When a sperm cell fertilizes an egg cell, their genetic material combines to form a zygote. The zygote is a diploid cell, meaning it contains the full complement of chromosomes, half inherited from the male parent and half from the female parent. This zygote then develops into a new individual.

The production of gametes is a specialized process. In males, spermatogenesis produces a continuous supply of sperm. In females, oogenesis produces a limited number of eggs, typically releasing one mature egg during each reproductive cycle. The fusion of gametes ensures genetic diversity within a species, as each offspring inherits a unique combination of genes from its parents. This genetic variation is crucial for adaptation and evolution.
