Suitsetamine is the Estonian word for smoking, referring to the act of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning plant material, most commonly tobacco. Historically, smoking has been practiced in various cultures for medicinal, spiritual, and recreational purposes. In modern times, it is primarily associated with the use of manufactured cigarettes, cigars, and pipes.

The primary psychoactive component in tobacco smoke is nicotine, a stimulant that is highly addictive. Regular smoking can lead to a strong physical and psychological dependence, making cessation difficult. The health consequences of smoking are extensive and well-documented. These include increased risk of lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory illnesses such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, and numerous other cancers. Secondhand smoke, inhaled by non-smokers in the vicinity of smokers, also poses significant health risks.
