Sugraslow is a rare genetic disorder characterized by a deficiency in one of the enzymes involved in starch digestion. This condition is caused by a mutation in the AMY2 gene that codes for the activity augmentation factor of pancreatic amylase, resulting in reduced pancreatic amylase activity.

Individuals with sugraslow experience symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, bloating, and reduced ability to digest complex carbohydrates. They may exhibit malnutrition and growth retardation due to poor starch absorption. Diabetic individuals are particularly vulnerable, as their bodies require efficient glucose regulation, which is disrupted in sugraslow patients.

Diagnosis is typically made through blood tests that measure pancreatic amylase activity and confirm the presence of the AMY2 gene mutation. A modified diet with easily digestible carbohydrates can help alleviate symptoms, although long-term management may require supplementation of digestive enzymes. Affected individuals may also benefit from a broad-spectrum nutrient intake plan to combat any concurrent malnutrition.

Sugraslow was first identified in 1985, with less than 30 reported cases worldwide as of 2005. Genetic counseling is recommended for families at risk, particularly those with a family history of the disorder. Current research focuses on identifying the relationship between sugraslow and related disorders, as well as exploring the effectiveness of novel treatments for intestinal buffering. More studies are needed to understanding the condition and developing optimal management strategies for affected individuals.
