suffic

Suffic is not a standard term in linguistics or most scholarly fields. It is most commonly a misspelling or mispronunciation of suffix, the affix placed at the end of a word.

In linguistics, a suffix is a bound morpheme that attaches to a base to alter its meaning or grammatical category. Suffixes can mark tense, number, case, mood, derivation, or part of speech. In English, examples include -ness (happiness), -ed (walked), -ing (running). Suffixes are distinguished from prefixes (which attach to the beginning of a word) and infixes (which insert inside a word in some languages).

Origin of the term suffix: from Latin sub- "under" and fixus "fixed", historically conveying something fixed to the end. In modern linguistics, the idea of attachment is understood in terms of affixation and morphology. In computing, suffix also refers to the trailing extension of a file name (for example, .txt). The form suffic does not have a recognized independent meaning in standard reference works.
