Land-use policies and zoning frequently prioritize residential uses, contributing to spatial separation of homes, jobs, and commerce.

Critiques of suburbanization associated with suburbanites point to environmental impacts such as increased vehicle emissions and habitat fragmentation, economic costs of infrastructure maintenance, and social concerns about segregation by income or race. Conversely, advocates note benefits including lower housing cost per square foot, perceived safety, and access to private outdoor space.
