A subnebula is a term that has been used, though not widely adopted in mainstream astronomy, to describe a hypothetical, smaller-scale structure that might exist within or be associated with a larger nebula. Nebulae themselves are vast interstellar clouds of dust and gas, often regions where stars are born or the remnants of dead stars. The concept of a subnebula suggests a localized concentration of matter within these larger formations, potentially having its own internal dynamics or serving as a progenitor to a specific star or stellar system.

The idea of a subnebula is not a formally defined astronomical object like a planet or a galaxy. Instead, it can be thought of as a descriptive term for a more dense or distinct region within a larger nebula. For instance, in the process of star formation, gas and dust collapse under gravity to form protostars. The immediate surroundings of such a collapsing region, before it fully coalesces into a star or planetary system, could be conceptualized as a subnebula. These smaller regions might exhibit different temperatures, densities, or chemical compositions compared to the parent nebula.

While the term itself is not common in current astronomical literature, the phenomena it might describe are actively studied. Astronomers observe dense cores within molecular clouds, which are the precursors to star formation. These cores are essentially the localized regions of heightened gravitational attraction and density that eventually give rise to stars. Therefore, the concept of a subnebula aligns with our understanding of hierarchical structure and localized collapse within the grander scale of interstellar nebulae, even if a different terminology is typically employed.
