Subjugating is the act or process of bringing a person, group, or territory under domination or control, typically by means of coercion, force, or political power. The term emphasizes the end state of subordination rather than the means alone and can apply to military conquest, political domination, or social subordination.

Etymology: from Latin subjugare, from sub- "under" + jugum "yoke," the imagery being to place something under a controlling yoke. The noun subjugation and the gerund subjugating share the same root and sense of coercive control.

Historically, subjugating has described the domination of peoples, regions, or classes by an external or ruling power.
