Subjectivism is a philosophical stance that emphasizes the importance of individual experience and perspective. In epistemology, subjectivism suggests that knowledge is ultimately derived from or dependent upon individual consciousness. This means that what a person knows or believes to be true is shaped by their personal feelings, beliefs, and perceptions. Truth, therefore, can be relative to the individual experiencing it, rather than existing as an objective, universal reality independent of any observer.

In ethics, subjectivism posits that moral truths are also subjective. This view holds that what is considered right or wrong is determined by individual attitudes, preferences, or cultural norms, rather than by objective moral principles. For example, an ethical subjectivist might argue that a statement like "killing is wrong" is not a declaration of an objective fact, but rather an expression of the speaker's personal disapproval or a reflection of societal sentiment.

This contrasts with objectivism, which asserts the existence of independent truths and values accessible to all. Subjectivism raises questions about the possibility of shared understanding and common ground, as well as the basis for moral judgment and societal order. It highlights the personal nature of consciousness and its role in constructing our understanding of the world and our place within it.
