This condition typically results from a severe head injury, such as a blow to the head or a fall, which causes the rupture of a blood vessel in the brain.

The primary cause of subdural hematoma is often a high-velocity impact or a sudden deceleration, which can lead to the tearing of bridging veins that connect the brain to the dura mater. The blood that accumulates in the subdural space can exert pressure on the brain, leading to neurological symptoms such as headache, confusion, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness.

Diagnosis of subdural hematoma is usually confirmed through imaging studies, such as computed tomography (CT) scans, which can visualize the blood accumulation between the dura mater and the brain.
