subduks

Subduks refers to subduction zones in plate tectonics, regions where one lithospheric plate sinks beneath another and descends into the mantle. This process happens mainly at convergent plate boundaries, with the oceanic lithosphere typically subducting beneath a continental or another oceanic plate. The descending slab generates a Wadati–Benioff seismic zone and forms deep ocean trenches and volcanic arcs on the overriding plate.

The mechanism of subduks involves the density contrast between plates and the cooling, aging of oceanic lithosphere. As the slab sinks, it releases fluids into the surrounding mantle, lowering the melting point and contributing to magmatism in the overlying plate. Subduction drives recycling of crustal material and generates significant geologic hazards, including powerful earthquakes and tsunamis. Slab geometry can vary from steep to shallow, and in some regions a shallow or flat slab can extend far inland, influencing crustal deformation and volcanic activity.

Characteristic features of subduks include deep trenches, accretionary prisms, volcanic arcs, and high-pressure metamorphic rocks formed during subduction. Notable systems include the Andes subduction zone (Nazca plate under South America), the Japan-Kurile arc (Pacific plate under Japan), the Cascadia margin (Juan de Fuca under North America), and the Sunda and Indonesian arcs (Pacific and Indo-Australian plates).

Subduks are central to the theory of plate tectonics, explaining mountain building, trench formation, and the genesis of many earthquakes. The concept matured in the 20th century with global seismological and geodetic data supporting ongoing plate motion.
