Subcooles is a term used to describe the practice and equipment involved in cooling a liquid below its saturation temperature after it has condensed, most commonly in refrigeration and HVAC systems. In a typical cycle, refrigerant leaves the condenser as a saturated liquid; subcooling further lowers its temperature, producing a fully subcooled liquid before it reaches the expansion device.

A subcooler is a heat exchanger that transfers heat from the condensed liquid to another medium, such as cooling water, air, or the condenser outlet, to achieve temperatures below the condensation point at the prevailing pressure. The degree of subcooling is measured as the difference between the liquid’s actual temperature and its saturation temperature at the condenser pressure, often expressed in kelvin (or degrees Celsius). Subcooling levels commonly range from about 5 to 20 K, depending on system design and refrigerant.

Benefits of subcooling include reduced flash gas in the evaporator, improved refrigerant metering and system efficiency, and greater tolerance to small pressure or temperature fluctuations. It can also improve liquid-vapor separation and moisture control in some systems. However, excessive subcooling increases condenser load and can raise energy consumption or equipment costs, so design involves balancing benefits with capital and operating expenses.

Subcooles applications span automotive air conditioning, commercial and industrial refrigeration, and some process cooling systems. In practice, subcooling strategies are chosen based on refrigerant type, system capacity, and performance targets.
