Subaraknoidaalitilaan refers to the subarachnoid space, a critical anatomical region within the human central nervous system. This space is located between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater, two of the three meninges that surround the brain and spinal cord. The subarachnoid space is not a true empty void but rather a complex network of trabeculae, which are fine collagenous and elastic fibers, interspersed with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

The primary function of the subarachnoid space is to house and circulate cerebrospinal fluid. CSF acts as a cushion, protecting the brain and spinal cord from mechanical shock and trauma. It also plays a vital role in nutrient supply and waste removal for the central nervous system, effectively acting as a circulatory medium. Furthermore, the space contains major blood vessels, including cerebral arteries and veins, which supply and drain blood from the brain. The arachnoid granulations, also known as arachnoid villi, protrude into the venous sinuses from the subarachnoid space and are responsible for the reabsorption of CSF into the bloodstream.

Pathological conditions affecting the subarachnoid space can have significant neurological consequences. Subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of stroke, occurs when blood leaks into this space, often due to the rupture of a cerebral aneurysm. This condition can lead to increased intracranial pressure, vasospasm, and severe neurological deficits. Infections, such as meningitis, can also affect the subarachnoid space, leading to inflammation of the meninges.
