stílusú

Stílusú is a Hungarian attributive adjective formed from the noun stílus (style) with the suffix -ú. It is used to create phrases that designate a noun as belonging to a particular stylistic tradition, often rendered in English as “in the style of” or “style X.” The usual construction places the style name before stílusú: barokk stílusú épület (an architectural building in Baroque style), romantikus stílusú film (a film of romantic style), modern stílusú ruházat (modern-style clothing).

Grammatically, stílusú itself does not carry the declension of the modified noun; the entire noun phrase is inflected. For example, barokk stílusú épületet (accusative singular), barokk stílusú épületek (nominative plural). The phrase is therefore compatible with standard Hungarian case endings placed after the head noun.

Stílusú is commonly used across domains such as architecture, visual arts, design, fashion, film and literary critique to indicate aesthetic characteristics or intentional imitation. It can express authenticity—an object of Baroque style—or eclecticism and retrofitting—retro-stílusú bútorok, an item styled in a nostalgic manner. The term tends to appear in descriptive, formal, or academic prose and is less typical in casual speech, where other expressions like “a la” or “stílusirányzat” might be preferred.

Etymologically, the form derives from stílus with the participial suffix -ú, yielding an adjective that agrees with the modified noun in case and number. While it frequently accompanies well-known style names (barokk, romantikus, modern), it can modify any noun that denotes a stylistic category.
