Stylites were Christian ascetics who lived atop pillars as a form of extreme eremitic practice. The word stylite comes from the Greek stylos, meaning “pillar.” The tradition arose in the late ancient Near East, with pillar dwellings near towns such as Antioch and Aleppo, and continued into the Byzantine period. Stylites sought to detach from ordinary life and intensify spiritual discipline through withdrawal, prayer, and public witness.
