Strømningsrør, or flow tubes, are conceptual lines used in fluid dynamics to visualize and analyze the motion of fluids. They are defined as lines that are instantaneously parallel to the velocity vector of the fluid at every point. Imagine a fluid moving; if you were to draw a line that perfectly traces the path of a fluid particle at a specific moment in time, that would be a strømningsrør.

The key characteristic of strømningsrør is that no fluid can cross them. This is because the fluid velocity is always tangent to the strømningsrør. Therefore, fluid particles that start on one side of a strømningsrør will always remain on that side. This property makes them useful for understanding how fluids flow around obstacles or through confined spaces.

In steady flow, where the velocity at any given point does not change with time, strømningsrør are identical to pathlines (the actual trajectory of a fluid particle over time) and streaklines (the locus of fluid particles that have passed through a particular point in space). However, in unsteady flow, these lines can diverge.

The concept of strømningsrør is fundamental in fields such as aerodynamics, hydraulics, and meteorology. By observing the pattern of strømningsrør, engineers and scientists can infer information about fluid velocity, pressure, and turbulence within a flow field. The density of strømningsrør in a given region can also indicate areas of higher or lower fluid velocity; where the tubes are closer together, the fluid is moving faster.
