Streamcarving is a geological process where flowing water erodes and shapes the land. Over time, the persistent force of moving water, carrying sediment, wears away rock and soil, creating distinct landforms. This erosion is particularly effective in areas with softer rock or where the water flow is rapid. The sediment transported by the stream, acting like sandpaper, further aids in the abrasion and grinding down of the streambed and banks.

The primary mechanisms involved in streamcarving include hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition, and solution. Hydraulic action occurs when the sheer force of the water dislodges material from the streambed and banks. Abrasion happens when the sediment carried by the water grinds against the rock. Attrition is the process where the transported sediment particles collide with each other, breaking down into smaller and smoother pieces. Solution involves the dissolution of soluble rocks, like limestone, by the slightly acidic water.

The results of streamcarving are evident in various geomorphic features. Valleys, canyons, and gorges are large-scale examples of streamcarving. Smaller features include potholes, which are circular depressions formed by swirling sediment, and meanders, the sinuous curves of a river channel. The rate and extent of streamcarving depend on factors such as the volume and velocity of water, the type of rock material, and the sediment load. This ongoing process is a fundamental aspect of landscape evolution.
