Stratospheric refers to phenomena, substances, or processes that are located within or originate from the stratosphere. The stratosphere is a layer of Earth's atmosphere, situated above the troposphere and below the mesosphere. It extends from an average altitude of about 7 to 20 kilometers (4 to 12 miles) at the poles and 7 to 17 kilometers (4 to 11 miles) at the equator, up to about 50 kilometers (31 miles).

A key characteristic of the stratosphere is the presence of the ozone layer, which absorbs most of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This absorption of UV light causes a temperature increase with altitude within the stratosphere, which is the opposite of the temperature profile in the troposphere. This temperature inversion also makes the stratosphere very stable, with little vertical mixing of air.

Stratospheric phenomena can include atmospheric waves, volcanic aerosols that reach this altitude, and the behavior of certain pollutants. For example, volcanic eruptions can inject ash and gases high into the atmosphere, and if they reach the stratosphere, they can persist there for extended periods, influencing global temperatures and atmospheric chemistry. Similarly, substances like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), once released, can slowly rise into the stratosphere where they contribute to ozone depletion. The movement of air within the stratosphere is generally horizontal rather than vertical, meaning that substances introduced at one location can spread globally over time.
