Stratified sampling is a probability sampling technique that involves dividing a population into homogeneous subgroups, also known as strata, and then randomly selecting individuals from each stratum. This method is used when the population is heterogeneous and contains distinct subgroups that may influence the outcome of the study. By ensuring representation from each stratum, stratified sampling aims to produce a more accurate and representative sample than simple random sampling, especially when dealing with subgroups of varying sizes.

The process begins with identifying the relevant strata within the population. These strata are mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive, meaning every individual belongs to exactly one stratum. Common criteria for stratification include age, gender, socioeconomic status, or geographic location, depending on the research question. Once the strata are defined, a sampling frame for each stratum is created. Then, a random sampling method, such as simple random sampling or systematic sampling, is applied within each stratum to select the required number of participants. The sample size for each stratum can be determined proportionally to its size in the population (proportional allocation) or disproportionately, based on the variability within the stratum or the importance of the stratum to the study (optimal allocation).

Stratified sampling offers several advantages. It guarantees that all key subgroups of the population are represented in the sample, reducing sampling error and increasing the precision of estimates. It is particularly useful for analyzing differences between subgroups. However, it requires prior knowledge of the population's characteristics to define strata effectively and can be more complex and time-consuming to implement than simple random sampling. The effectiveness of stratified sampling depends on the appropriate selection and definition of strata.
