Strandhabitat refers to coastal beach ecosystems located at the interface of land and sea, typically comprising beaches, dune systems, backshore areas, and, in some classifications, the nearshore subtidal fringe. These habitats are dynamic and continually reshaped by tides, waves, wind, and storms, producing gradients in moisture, salinity, and disturbance.

The physical setting includes granular substrates ranging from fine to coarse sands, with an intertidal zone that alternates between submerged and exposed. Dune belts rise above the high-tide line, stabilized by vegetation such as marram grass (Ammophila spp.) and other salt-tolerant plants that trap and organize wind-blown sand, creating habitat mosaics.

Biota are adapted to high energy and salinity; flora includes pioneer dune plants and dune grasses, while fauna encompasses a diverse assemblage of invertebrates (amphipods, crustaceans, bivalves, burrowing worms) and vertebrates such as shorebirds that forage on the wet or exposed beach, and seabirds that roost on dunes. Intertidal organisms inhabit the splash zone and nearshore subtidal areas.

Ecological processes in strandhabitats include sediment transport by longshore drift, dune formation and stabilization, nutrient exchange between marine and terrestrial systems, and seasonal successional changes of vegetation. These systems provide services such as coastal protection against storms, filtration, habitat for migratory birds, and recreational opportunities.

Threats and management: coastal development, trampling, artificial nourishment, invasive species, pollution, and climate change threaten dune integrity and beach communities. Conservation approaches emphasize protective zoning, dune restoration, responsible recreation, habitat monitoring, and, where appropriate, managed realignment or soft stabilization to maintain natural dynamics.
