The origin of the name Stosoway is uncertain. Theories include roots meaning “stone by the sea” or a reference to an early settler family named Stoso. The current pronunciation has been preserved in local usage.

Stosoway appears in maritime records from the 14th century, when salt production and small-scale shipbuilding supported its early growth.
