Stolonenwachstum refers to the process by which certain plants extend their growth through specialized horizontal stems known as stolons, also called runners. These stolons are typically aboveground stems that grow outward from the parent plant, rooting at nodes along their length and eventually forming new daughter plants. This mode of vegetative reproduction is a common and efficient way for many plant species to colonize new areas and spread.

The development of stolons usually begins with an axillary bud on the parent plant. This bud elongates and grows horizontally, often just above the soil surface. As the stolon elongates, nodes are formed at regular intervals. At these nodes, adventitious roots may emerge, anchoring the developing plant to the substrate. Simultaneously, a shoot bud at the node can develop into a new stem and leaves, forming an independent daughter plant.

Stolonenwachstum is advantageous as it allows for rapid colonization of favorable habitats and ensures the offspring are established in a similar environment to the parent. It also bypasses the need for sexual reproduction, which can be more time-consuming and less reliable. Many well-known plants, such as strawberries, spider plants, and some grasses, utilize stolonenwachstum as their primary means of propagation. The length and frequency of stolon production can vary significantly between species and are influenced by environmental factors like light, temperature, and soil moisture.
