stjernedannende refers to the process by which stars are born. This cosmic event primarily takes place within vast, cold, and dense clouds of gas and dust known as nebulae or molecular clouds. These clouds are composed mostly of hydrogen and helium, with trace amounts of heavier elements and dust grains.

The formation of a star begins when a region within a nebula becomes sufficiently dense, often triggered by external events like the shockwave from a supernova or the gravitational influence of a nearby star. This increased density causes the material in that region to start collapsing under its own gravity. As the cloud collapses, it fragments into smaller clumps, each of which has the potential to form a star.

As a clump of gas and dust collapses, it spins faster and flattens into a disk due to the conservation of angular momentum. At the center of this rotating disk, the material continues to accumulate, and its temperature and pressure increase dramatically. When the core of the collapsing cloud reaches a critical temperature and density, nuclear fusion ignites. This is the process where hydrogen atoms fuse to form helium, releasing immense amounts of energy.

This energy creates an outward pressure that counteracts the inward pull of gravity, stabilizing the nascent star. The star then enters the main sequence phase of its life, where it will spend the majority of its existence. The material in the surrounding disk may eventually form planets, asteroids, and other celestial bodies, giving rise to a star system.
