Stereoskopické refers to the perception of depth and three-dimensional space. It is achieved when an organism or device can view an object from two different viewpoints simultaneously. The slight difference in the image received by each viewpoint, known as binocular disparity, is processed by the brain or a computational system to create a sense of depth. This is the basis of stereopsis, the ability to see in three dimensions.

In humans and many other animals, stereoscopic vision is facilitated by two eyes positioned apart on the head. Each eye captures a slightly different image of the world. The brain then merges these two images, calculating the disparity to determine the relative distances of objects. This allows for accurate depth perception, crucial for tasks such as judging distances, navigating environments, and interacting with objects.

Beyond biological vision, stereoscopic principles are applied in various technologies. Stereoscopic photography and cinematography capture two images, one for each eye, which are then presented to the viewer through special viewers or displays. This creates the illusion of three-dimensional depth when viewing a two-dimensional image. Examples include 3D movies, virtual reality headsets, and stereoscopic microscopes.

Stereoscopic imaging systems often use techniques like polarized filters, anaglyph images (red and cyan filters), or shutter glasses to ensure that each eye receives only its intended image. The effectiveness of stereoscopic perception relies on the quality of the images, the separation of the viewpoints, and the processing capabilities of the observer or system.
