stemgroep

Stemgroep is a Dutch term that refers to a group of singers designated to a particular vocal part within a choir or vocal ensemble. In practice, a stemgroep corresponds to a voice group (for example soprano, alto, tenor, bass) and is responsible for singing lines in that range. The members of a stemgroep rehearse separately to develop technique and blend, before joining the other groups for full ensemble rehearsals and performances. The size of a stemgroep varies with the choir and repertoire and can range from a few singers to a larger section. In many choirs, there are multiple subgroups within a part (for instance two soprano groups) to allow internal balance and flexibility during rehearsal and performance.
