A steed is a horse that is ridden or used as a mount. The term is chiefly literary or historical, used to evoke travel, combat, or nobility. It does not refer to a specific breed or type, and any domesticated horse suitable for riding may be called a steed.

Steeds belong to the domesticated horse, Equus caballus, and have served in war, agriculture, transport, sport, and ceremonial roles throughout history. Their care includes appropriate nutrition, regular veterinary attention, hoof maintenance, and training to ensure safety for rider and animal.

In literature and folklore, steeds are often endowed with symbolic meanings such as loyalty, speed, freedom, or power. Legendary and mythical examples include Bucephalus, the horse of Alexander the Great; Rocinante, Don Quixote's mount; and Pegasus, a winged horse from Greek myth. In fantasy genres, steeds may possess magical abilities, distinctive temperaments, or names that set them apart from ordinary horses.

Today the word persists primarily in historical, fictional, or poetic contexts. In everyday usage, terms like horse or mount are more common, while steed remains a stylistic choice signaling tradition, epic narrative, or folkloric flavor.
