A startmotor, also known as a starter motor, is an electric motor used to rotate an internal combustion engine to start it. It is typically engaged when the ignition key is turned or a start button is pressed. The startmotor draws a significant amount of electrical current from the vehicle's battery. This electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy, which is then used to turn the engine's crankshaft.

The main components of a startmotor include an electric motor, a solenoid, and a pinion gear. The solenoid acts as a switch, connecting the battery to the startmotor and simultaneously pushing the pinion gear forward to engage with the engine's flywheel. Once the engine starts and the ignition key is released, the solenoid retracts the pinion gear, and the startmotor disengages. The design and power of a startmotor vary depending on the size and type of engine it is intended to start. A faulty startmotor can prevent a vehicle from starting, often making a clicking sound or no sound at all when the ignition is turned.
