Stagnatio is a Latin noun meaning stagnation or the state of standing still, especially the halt of flow in liquids or other dynamic processes. The term is built from the Latin roots associated with standing or remaining unmoved, and it appears in medical and scientific Latin as a description of impeded movement or accumulation.

In historical medical literature, stagnatio referred to the supposed impediment of the normal flow of bodily fluids, such as blood, bile, lymph, or urine. Phrases like stagnatio sanguinis (blood stagnation) or stagnatio bilis (biliary stagnation) were used to describe conditions believed to arise from reduced circulation or drainage. Such concepts were common in ancient and medieval Galenic medicine and persisted into early modern times, often guiding diagnosis and treatment according to the theory of humors and imbalanced physiology.

In modern usage, the explicit Latin term stagnatio is rarely employed outside philological or historical contexts. Contemporary terminology tends to use related concepts such as stasis or stagnation in the appropriate language (for example, venous stasis, cholestasis), while the core idea remains the same: impeded flow leading to accumulation or delayed movement of fluids or processes.

Outside medicine, stagnatio can also appear in hydrological or ecological discussions to describe water that remains motionless or an ecosystem with little productive flow. The term is therefore primarily of historical and linguistic interest, with its modern equivalents expressed in more common scientific terminology.
