Staatloosheid, often translated as statelessness, refers to the condition of not possessing any nationality. A stateless person is someone who is not considered a national by any state under the operation of its law. This can occur for a variety of reasons, including the dissolution of states, changes in borders, or discriminatory laws that prevent certain groups from acquiring nationality.

Statelessness has profound consequences for individuals. Without a nationality, stateless persons often lack access to fundamental rights, such as the right to education, healthcare, employment, and freedom of movement. They may be unable to obtain travel documents, making them vulnerable to arbitrary detention and expulsion. Statelessness can also lead to a lack of legal recognition, making it difficult to marry, register births, or inherit property.

International law aims to prevent and reduce statelessness. The 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons and the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness are key international instruments addressing this issue. These conventions set standards for the treatment of stateless persons and require states to take measures to prevent statelessness from occurring, particularly at birth. Despite these efforts, millions of people worldwide remain stateless, facing significant challenges in exercising their basic human rights and achieving full integration into society.
