MOVs are widely used due to their cost-effectiveness and ability to absorb significant energy from surges. TVS diodes offer faster response times and are often preferred for protecting more sensitive electronics.

Spændingsundertrykkere are available in various forms, from simple plug-in strips for household electronics to more robust units integrated into power distribution systems for industrial applications. The effectiveness of a spændingsundertrykker is often measured by its joule rating, which indicates the amount of energy it can absorb before failing, and its clamping voltage, the voltage level at which it begins to divert excess current. Regular inspection and replacement may be necessary as these devices can degrade over time or after absorbing a large surge.
