Spændingsundertrykkere

Spændingsundertrykkere, also known as voltage suppressors or surge protectors, are devices designed to protect electrical and electronic equipment from damage caused by transient voltage spikes or surges. These surges can be caused by various sources, including lightning strikes, power outages and restorations, and the switching of heavy electrical loads.

The primary function of a spændingsundertrykker is to detect a sudden increase in voltage above a safe operating level. When such an event occurs, the suppressor diverts the excess voltage away from the protected equipment, typically to the ground. This diversion prevents the damaging overvoltage from reaching sensitive components that could be permanently harmed.

Common types of spændingsundertrykkere include metal oxide varistors (MOVs) and transient voltage suppressors (TVS diodes). MOVs are widely used due to their cost-effectiveness and ability to absorb significant energy from surges. TVS diodes offer faster response times and are often preferred for protecting more sensitive electronics.

Spændingsundertrykkere are available in various forms, from simple plug-in strips for household electronics to more robust units integrated into power distribution systems for industrial applications. The effectiveness of a spændingsundertrykker is often measured by its joule rating, which indicates the amount of energy it can absorb before failing, and its clamping voltage, the voltage level at which it begins to divert excess current. Regular inspection and replacement may be necessary as these devices can degrade over time or after absorbing a large surge.
