Creation and characteristics: The sprint goal is defined during sprint planning and should be specific, feasible, and testable. It is typically one sentence and anchored in the product goal.

Relation to backlog and scope: The items in the sprint backlog are chosen to realize the sprint goal. If new work appears or scope changes threaten the goal, the team and product owner may renegotiate.

Example: A sprint goal might be "Deliver a usable checkout flow that enables existing customers to complete a purchase and passes defined acceptance criteria," guiding the team to implement and validate the necessary backlog items within the sprint.

Roles and governance: The Product Owner articulates the sprint goal, the Development Team commits to achieving it, and the Scrum Master facilitates alignment and helps remove impediments to reach the goal.

Benefits and limitations: A clear sprint goal provides focus, alignment with the product strategy, and a basis for collaboration and inspection. It should remain realistic and stable enough to guide work without constraining necessary adaptation during the sprint.
