Spiral antennas are a type of radio antenna characterized by their helical or spiral shape. They consist of a conductive spiral element wound around a dielectric or insulating material, often mounted over a ground plane. This unique geometry allows them to radiate or receive electromagnetic waves efficiently.

One of the primary advantages of spiral antennas is their ability to operate over a wide range of frequencies, making them broadband antennas. This characteristic is due to the inherent frequency-independent nature of their design, meaning their radiation pattern and impedance remain relatively constant across a broad spectrum. This property makes them ideal for applications where the operating frequency may vary or is unknown.

Spiral antennas come in various forms, including planar spirals, conical spirals, and volumetric spirals. The planar spiral, often called a flat spiral, is the most common type, fabricated on a circuit board. Conical spirals have a three-dimensional conical shape.

Due to their broadband capabilities and relatively compact size, spiral antennas find use in diverse applications. These include electronic warfare systems for signal interception and jamming, radar systems, electronic countermeasures (ECM), and as antennas for radio astronomy research. They are also employed in certain telecommunications and sensing applications where wide frequency coverage is essential. The polarization of the radiated wave is typically circular, which can be advantageous in reducing signal fading caused by multipath propagation.
