Spinstorms, also known as dust devils or whirlwinds, are rotating columns of air that form under specific atmospheric conditions. They are typically observed on clear, hot, and dry days when the ground heats up rapidly. This intense heating causes the air near the surface to become unstable and rise. As the warm air ascends, it can begin to rotate due to uneven heating or slight pre-existing air currents.

The visual appearance of a spinstorm is a visible vortex, often characterized by dust, sand, or debris picked up from the ground. Their size can vary considerably, from a few feet tall to hundreds of feet high, and their diameter can range from a few feet to several yards across. Spinstorms are generally short-lived, lasting from a few seconds to several minutes, and their intensity is typically mild, posing little to no threat.

While most spinstorms are harmless, larger and more powerful ones can cause minor damage, such as overturning small objects or kicking up significant dust. They are distinct from tornadoes, which form from thunderstorms and are characterized by their much greater destructive power and more complex formation processes. Spinstorms are a common phenomenon in arid and semi-arid regions worldwide.
