sphaeria
Sphaeria is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Sordariales. Historically, the genus Sphaeria was a broad and inclusive category used by mycologists to describe many fungi that produced spherical fruiting bodies, known as perithecia. Over time, as understanding of fungal taxonomy improved, many species formerly placed within Sphaeria were reclassified into new genera based on detailed morphological and genetic studies. This process of taxonomic revision means that the current definition of Sphaeria is much narrower than its original conception.
Fungi within the genus Sphaeria typically grow on decaying plant material, such as wood, leaves, and dung.
